The abstract is a short description of your research project. It will differ if it is a project yet to be carried out vs. a project completed. The basic components of an abstract are:

• The Problem Statement/Motivation: WHY is what you are proposing to do/doing significant? What gap in our understanding/knowledge is your research going to fill?
• The Approach: What are you going to do? What is the process?
• The Results: What do you plan to learn/invent/create? OR What did you learn/invent/create?
• The Implications: What are the implications of your results relative to your problem/motivation (1)?
